Plastic: the perfect balance
Cheaper. Lighter. Faster. Three key attributes that those in the auto world strive for, and which are achieved by making the switch from metal parts to those fashioned from plastic.
Aside from the fact that there are many more choices when it comes to plastic compared to metals, and therefore the end product is aesthetically more pleasing, the benefits go far beyond those spotted with the naked eye.
Due to the nature of how plastic is formed, parts are much lighter overall than metals, making them easier to transport and less expensive to ship, and of course more favorable in cars where less weight equals better performance. But it doesn’t stop at weight, the fact that plastic doesn’t corrode is another important factor, especially in countries with inclement weather which has historically been a challenge for automotive makers.
It’s little wonder that as much as 50% of modern cars are made from plastic products, especially given the fact they can be molded to virtually any shape, they are good insulators and therefore reduce the risk of electric conductivity or shock, they can be produced at scale, and they can be built to fit specific conditions such as high impact areas which require shock absorption. Something metals simply cannot compete with.
As a supplier to the auto industry for decades, ADIS Tachov s.r.o. have established themselves as market leaders in the supply of all things plastic. Setting a new standard in the injectionmolding field, executive director and sixsigma black belt Jeremy Svoboda concludes the list of plastic benefits by saying that “Plastic is not only more versatile than metal, its stronger, more durable, lasts longer and is ultimately cheaper to manufacture. If you can dream it, we can make it with plastic”.
